Toamasina (Tamatave) is Madagascar’s main seaport, on the east coast — the country’s principal maritime gateway, handling the bulk of its foreign trade. It is also the coastal terminus of the Ambatovy nickel and cobalt operation, whose ore is pipelined from the interior to a processing plant near the city, with finished briquettes exported through the port.
