Volkswagen’s Plant Kariega builds the Polo for world markets from the renamed Uitenhage, Isuzu assembles its bakkies and trucks at Struandale in the city — where Ford also builds engines — and a major catalytic-converter and components cluster exports globally. Two ports serve the bay: the in-city Port of Port Elizabeth with its vehicle terminal and the country’s largest manganese facility, and the deepwater Port of Ngqura beside the vast Coega special economic zone, while Algoa Bay — named the Bottlenose Dolphin Capital of the World by the World Cetacean Alliance — drives coastal tourism.
