Annaba, on the north-eastern Mediterranean coast, is Algeria’s steel city and a mineral-export gateway. The El Hadjar integrated steelworks — the state-owned complex now run under the SIDER group, historically one of the largest of its kind in Africa — sits a short way inland; and the city’s port ships iron, steel and, increasingly, phosphate, with a new deepwater mineral quay opened in 2024 to carry exports from the country’s phosphate mines.
