Takoradi — half of the Sekondi-Takoradi twin city, capital of the Western Region — is Ghana’s original gateway. The Port of Takoradi, commissioned in 1928 as the country’s first, ships the bulk of Ghana’s seaborne export tonnage — manganese, bauxite, cocoa and timber — by its port authority’s account; and since the Jubilee discovery in 2007 and first oil in 2010, the city has been the onshore logistics and services base for the offshore fields produced from floating platforms off the Western coast, earning its Oil City name.
