Tema is Ghana’s purpose-built industrial gateway — the planned port city raised under Kwame Nkrumah on the Greenwich Meridian, twenty-five kilometres east of Accra along the country’s first motorway. The Port of Tema is Ghana’s largest and busiest, its Terminal 3 — run by a joint venture of APM Terminals, AGL and the ports authority — handling the majority of the country’s containerised trade around the clock; the Tema enclave is the flagship of Ghana’s free zones and its main industrial concentration, from the landmark VALCO aluminium smelter to steel, food processing and chemicals; the state refinery resumed crude processing in late 2025 after years of inactivity; and the fishing harbour is home to Ghana’s industrial tuna fleet and canning industry.
That industrial economy runs on physical goods: containers across the terminals and depots, tooling, WIP and stock across free-zone factories, plant and spares across energy and heavy industry, chilled catch through the tuna cold chain, and fleets circulating the motorway corridor. Manual methods cannot keep pace at port volumes.
