Beira is the capital of Sofala Province and Mozambique’s second port, on the Mozambique Channel — the start of the Beira corridor, the road, rail and pipeline route that is the principal Indian-Ocean gateway for landlocked Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi. The port handles containers, bulk cargo such as coal, chrome, tobacco and fertiliser, and fuel. It sits in central Mozambique, well away from the far-northern Cabo Delgado province.
