Dire Dawa, one of Ethiopia’s largest cities and its principal eastern trade and railway hub, was founded in 1902 to serve the historic Franco-Ethiopian railway — and today the electrified Addis–Djibouti railway runs through it on its way to the sea at Djibouti. It is home to the Dire Dawa Free Trade Zone, Ethiopia’s first, and to the Dire Dawa Industrial Park’s garment and textile factories, making it a natural platform for cross-border trade and export manufacturing on the corridor.
